The Dallas Cowboys have won a lot of important games that came down to the wire. We take a look at a pivotal play in each of five games. Does a game winning play have to be the last play of the game to be on the list? Not necessarily. Let's get to the list and see what we have. Listed in reverse order from five to the number one top game-winning play of all time:
5. 2007, Oct. 8, at the Buffalo Bills
In a game where the Cowboys had 6 turnovers they trailed 24-22. Rookie field goal kicker, Nick Folk, had to kick a 53 yard field goal in the final seconds to win the game. The kick was good, but Buffalo had called time out just before the kick. Nick Folk had to kick again. The kick was good! The Dallas Cowboys won a game they should never have won 25 to 24.
4. 2009, Dec. 19, at the New Orleans Saints
In a game that everybody said the Cowboys had no chance to win they were leading 24 to 3 going into the fourth quarter. The Saints quickly scored two touchdowns to bring the score to 24-17. With the Saints driving again for the tie Demarcus Ware sacked Drew Brees and caused a fumble. Jay Ratliff recovered the ball and Dallas got the win. The Demarcus Ware sack and forced fumble had to be the game winning play.
3. 1972 NFC Divisional Playoff game, Dec. 23, against the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park.
Roger Staubach threw two touchdown passes in the final two minutes for the win over the 49ers, 24-28, but it was the onside kick recovery by Mel Renfro that allowed him to make that last touchdown pass.
2. 1995 Super Bowl XXX, Jan. 2, against the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Sun Devil Stadium in Arizona.
Dallas won this game in a pretty convincing manner, but the keys to the win were two interceptions by cornerback, Larry Brown. Dallas was ahead, the Steelers battled back, scoring 10 unanswered points. With the Steelers driving for what looked like at least a tie, Brown made the second of his interceptions and managed to run the ball back deep into Steeler territory. The second interception set up a touchdown run by Emmit Smith to salt the win. Larry Brown was an mvp of Super Bowl XXX.
1. 1975 NFC Divisional Playoff game, Jan. 18, against the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Miami Orange Bowl .
I don't think anybody who watched this game will ever forget the Hail Mary pass. With only 27 seconds remaining in the game Roger Staubach threw a 50 yard pass in the end zone to Drew Pearson. During an interview after the game Roger referred to the throw as a "Hail Mary" pass. This is where we get the name for this desperation play. The Cowboys won the game 17 to 14. The Staubach Hail Mary pass is the ultimate in game winning plays.
