Mike Shanahan offered Phillip Daniels a job on his coaching staff before the start of last season.

But the veteran defensive end declined because he was hoping to still play at age 38, according to Mike Jones of the Washington Post.

Now, Daniels is back with the Redskins. The club announced Daniels has been hired as the team’s director of player development after his 14-year playing career ended.

I’m really looking forward to helping our players and team win, on and off the field,” Daniels said.

Daniels spent his final six seasons with the Redskins, starting 67 of 83 games. He finished with 62 sacks in his career and began as a fourth-round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 1996. He also played four seasons with the Chicago Bears. Daniels tied a Redskins’ franchise record in 2005 with four sacks in a game against the Dallas Cowboys.
