When 33-year-old offensive lineman Leonard Davis was cut by the Dallas Cowboys before the season began, he may have believed his career to have been all but over. After all, he had started all of his career 155 games and, presumably, Dallas felt there was little left in the lineman's tank, releasing him in order to free up salary cap room for younger talent. On Monday, November 7, fate smiled at Davis who, along with running back Kevin Smith, joined the emerging Detroit Lions.

For Smith, this is his second go-round with Detroit. He was drafted by the Lions in 2008, where he nearly toppled the 1,000 yard mark as a rookie. Injuries calmed his offensive storm and Detroit opted to let him go. Smith returns to a Lions' team which, though it may appear vastly improved from his previous stay, suffers from a multitude of injuries, most notably in the backfield.

Both Davis and Smith signed one-year deals, giving the lions some insurance down the stretch. Quarterback Matthew Stafford will benefit from the addition of Davis, as the offensive line has been having some trouble keeping him upright. Smith, however, looks to combine with Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams, in covering for the loss of starter Javid Best, who remains sidelined with issues related to a concussion.

Both moves look like winners for Detroit, who make their post-bye return this Sunday against the division rival Chicago Bears. Obviously, they have seen Smith before and know what he can do. Davis, as made apparent by his starting streak, is a relatively effective and healthy lineman, which is something Detroit can greatly use.

Though the Lions did have to part ways with cornerback Anthony Madison and running back Eldra Buckley, their talent depth remains poignant enough to make similar moves in the future. The rebuilding process in Detroit has been largely due to the front office know how to get the most value out of a move, when and where the team needs it most. Detroit now looks to begin their second half of the season in the same fashion they began their first, overpowering opposing offenses and plowing through defensive lines. The additions of Davis and Smith indicate that their focus on these has not wavered.
