Former All-Pro linebacker Joey Porter of the Arizona Cardinals underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in early November in hopes of returning later this season, but it was not to be, as Wednesday he was placed on injured reserve.

Porter was wildly ineffective this season, managing only 16 tackles and one sack in six games. ProFootballFocus.com also graded him out as one of the league's worst linebackers during the brief period he was active.

To fill the newly vacant roster spot, the Cardinals promoted linebacker Brandon Williams from their practice squad.

Williams, a former fourth-round draft of the Dallas Cowboys out of Texas Tech in 2009, played in six games for the Cowboys a year ago and accumulated four tackles. He will assume special teams duties and fill a depth role on defense.

Unfortunately, Porter's NFL career appears to be in the ninth inning.

The 2005 Super Bowl champion has amassed 667 tackles, 98 sacks, and twelve interceptions throughout his thirteen year career.
