Tyron Smith, the ninth pick in the draft, plans to join his new Dallas Cowboys teammates in the coming days.

Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News reports that Smith announced on his Twitter account he would be headed to Texas soon and joining the workouts that have been led by players. The Cowboys have had a strong turnout so far with about 40 players gathering at an undisclosed location.

As Fraley notes, Smith takes a risk joining such workouts. Unless he secures some type of personal insurance, he has no protection in the event he is injured. If Smith were to be hurt working out, the Cowboys could proceed however they like in contract negotiations with him.

A similar risk is in place for players under contract. If they are injured working out, they could be placed on the non-football injury list and potentially face financial consequences. We’re not sure how much actual work linemen like Smith can get done in these informal settings without pads. The biggest goal in these workouts needs to be for the players to remain in shape.
