The Dallas Cowboys take on the New York Jets this Sunday and the word is that the team will do it without the services of cornerback Terence Newman and tight end Martellus Bennett.
After Newman strained his groin on Aug. 4, he tweeted that he'd be ready when the Jets game came, but the Dallas Morning News reports that "club officials were never that optimistic." His recovery has always been on a 5-6 week timetable, the paper points out, and he is now at the five-week mark.
Meanwhile, Bennett was only cleared to run on Monday while recovering from a high ankle sprain.
"The Cowboys won't rule Newman and Bennett out until later in the week," the Morning News notes. "But it's unlikely that either player will make enough progress in the next few days to be cleared to play."
