On Sunday October 23, 2011, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the St. Louis Rams 34-7. It was a dominating performance that proved nothing. The Cowboys cannot get too excited by this victory. Here is why.

It Was the St. Louis Rams

I was happy to see the Cowboys win an easy game for a change. Rookie running back DeMarco Murray set a franchise record with 253 rushing yards in the game. The Cowboys cruised to an easy 27-point victory. But this was the Rams. This was a winless team that just lost its starting quarterback Sam Bradford. This was the worst run defense in the National Football League (NFL). It was a team that knew the playoffs were all but out of reach. The Cowboys looked great but give much of that credit to the Rams.

No Test for Tony Romo

Romo had a lackluster day, throwing for just 166 yards. Thanks to the running game, Romo did not have to do it all. Romo did throw two touchdown passes. But it was the running game that shouldered the work. The Cowboys rushed for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Romo was not really tested by the Rams defense in this game. This was not the game to determine if Romo learned from his past mistakes this season.

Little Time to Celebrate

Next up for the Cowboys are the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys visit the Eagles in a game that will have a playoff atmosphere. The Eagles have underachieved this season and are desperate for wins. This game will be a true test for the Cowboys. Romo will face the pressure of an Eagles' defense that is second in the NFL in sacks. The Eagles are loaded with talent. Quarterback Michael Vick is a dynamic and dangerous player. The Cowboys were not tested at all by the Rams. We will learn a lot about the Cowboys after this game against the Eagles.

The Cowboys finally had an easy game this season. But do not get too excited about this victory. The Rams are one of the worst teams in the NFL. They make their opponents look good. We still do not know what the Cowboys are. We will find out more on Sunday October 30 when they visit the Eagles.

Ten early surprises in the 2011 NFL season: A fan's take

Edwin Torres has been a fan of the Dallas Cowboys since the days of Tony Dorsett and Roger Staubach. He enjoyed watching the Dallas teams of the 90s dominate opponents on both sides of the ball. Living in New Jersey, he is sandwiched between Giants and Eagles fans. But that has never deterred him from being a fan of America's team.
