ARLINGTON, TEXAS (AP) —Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray(notes) has a broken right ankle, ending his rookie season.
Murray was hurt at the end of an 8-yard run in the first quarter against the Giants on Sunday night. He was taken for X-rays, and in the third quarter the club announced he had both a broken right ankle and a high ankle sprain.
Murray set the franchise single-game rushing record in his first extended action earlier this season. He came into the game with a team-best 872 yards rushing. He had another 25 yards before getting hurt.
Perhaps the best evidence of his importance to the club was the way his teammates responded, with defensive stars DeMarcus Ware(notes), Jay Ratliff(notes), Bradie James(notes) and Terence Newman(notes) walking across the field to check on him.
