Todd Bowles is confident he is a legitimate candidate to become the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys despite the widespread belief that Jerry Jones will soon name Jason Garrett as the permanent replacement for Wade Phillips.
Garrett led the Cowboys to a 5-3 record as the interim coach, and most expect he will be named the head coach before the week is over. But the Cowboys gave an interview to Bowles, who is African-American, and the former Cowboys assistant believes everything was done above board.
“We had a good talk, a real good talk," Bowles said, according to the Dallas Morning News. "I gave him a lot to think about. I'm grateful for the chance to come in here. They thought enough of me to come in here and interview, so that was good."
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has also interviewed the team’s receivers coach, Ray Sherman. He is also African-American, but Jones likely needed to go outside the organization for a minority interview to properly satisfy the letter and spirit of the Rooney Rule.
"I didn't get that impression at all," said Bowles when asked if he was concerned he was given a token interview.
Bowles interviewed before to be the head coach of the Cowboys and he’s had similar previous opportunities in Denver and Detroit.
