IRVING, Texas - Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo threw passes with his bruised right hand during practice Wednesday although coach Jason Garrett characterized him as limited.
Garrett said Romo was able to "throw the ball OK" but still has swelling in his hand and needs to keep making progress this week heading into Sunday night's game at the New York Giants.
"It's still early, we hope that he progresses,' Garrett said after practice. "He has progressed since the game."
The winner of the regular season finale, a matchup of 8-7 teams, clinches the NFC East title and a playoff spot.
Romo was hurt on the opening series Saturday against Philadelphia when he banged his throwing hand against the helmet of a defender while following through on a pass. He never returned.
Reporters were only allowed to watch a few minutes of the early portion of practice. During that time, Romo made some soft tosses without wearing any kind of protection.
When the team gathered for stretching, Romo slipped a black glove on his right hand. But he removed the glove before a few more throws and at least one play where he took a snap from centre and handed off the ball.
When it wasn't his turn, he stuffed both hands in his pockets.
"I don't want to get into too many specifics," Garrett said when asked what Romo did the rest of the practice. "I thought he had a good day. … He seemed fairly functional."
Garrett said Romo was listed as limited because he didn't take all of his normal repetitions in practice. Stephen McGee, who finished Saturday's game, also took snaps with the first-team offense.
